Support Committee

The Air Training Corps Association of New Zealand, ATCANZ, is the national organisation that provides the civilian community representation for the Air Training Corps at the highest level of the New Zealand Cadet Forces, and it exists for the supporting and furthering of our interests. Each district and squadron has a branch of ATCANZ to fulfill this role, and in essence they are the civilian arm of an Air Training Corps squadron.

This journal is for news, updates, and information from the 17 Squadron Branch of ATCANZ... so that both parents of cadets and the wider community can be kept up to date with the operation of No.17 (City of Christchurch) Squadron. If you need to contact the 'Support Committee', contact details are below:

Parents September Update

Wing Parade

Cadets of No. 17 Squadron are combining with 18 and 38 Squadrons to mark the 10th anniversary of the Christchurch Units of the Air Training Corps being granted the Charter of the City by the Christchurch City Council.

The Wing Parade to commemorate this is being held at Cadet Forces Headquarters at Wigram commencing at 14:00 hours Saturday 24th of September. The parade will be reviewed by the Mayor of Christchurch.

All parents, friends and relatives are welcome to attend the parade.

E-Mail

If you did not receive this message by email it means we do not have your e-mail address on our records. If you are happy to receive this communication from the Unit by e-mail please advise your e-mail address to neil.wech@xtra.co.nz. This will save us postage for parent’s messages.

Fund Raising

One of the major functions of the Support Committee is fund-raising for the Unit. The funds raised during the year allow us to keep the Cadet levy at a reasonable level and also subsidises camps and activities to keep these costs to a minimum.

Due to the earthquake a couple of our major fund-raising activities have disappeared and we have been looking at alternatives. If anyone has a good idea the Committee would be delighted to hear from you.

Our goal is to use Parents where possible in connection with Cadets where appropriate. In this respect we have a couple of projects which we seek your assistance.

Mitre 10 Sausage Sizzle

We have been able to secure a number of Saturdays at Mitre 10 at Hornby to run sausage sizzles. We have already run a number of these this year with surprisingly good results, averaging a profit of $250 per day. Up to now these have been run by Committee Members and Officers in conjunction with Cadets but we now seek further assistance from parents.

We operate from 0900 through to 1500 hours each day with 2 shifts changing at 1200 hours. The dates that we need assistance for are:

September 24, October 1 and 8,  November 12 and 26.

If you can assist or need further details please advise to the above e-mail or else telephone

3371 687 or 0274 661 004. If you can bring your own Cadets so much the better otherwise the Squadron will organize. Generally we have one adult and 2 Cadets per shift.

Wine and Food Festival.

We are negotiating to provide manpower for the above festival which is being held at Hagley Park on Saturday December 3. This promises to be an excellent fundraiser but we have a problem in that it is the weekend of Sparrowhawk Camp which means most of our Officers and senior NCOs will be occupied at Burnham.

We are therefore hopeful that we can get between 20 and 30 parents to assist, again we envisage that 2 shifts would be used during the day.

While this is still a work in progress we would be grateful if you could note the date and advise if there is a possibility you could be available. We will then come back as more information unfolds.
